To address the shortage of fodder in the country, the government has finally designated National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) as the implementing agency for setting up 100 fodder centric Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) during the current financial year. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying had proposed setting up of fodder centric FPOs in the year 2020 and requested the Agriculture Ministry to allow such FPOs under the central scheme “Creation and Promotion of 10,000 New FPOs”.

It said that NDDB has been entrusted with the task of setting up 100 FPOs during 202223 under the plan guidelines. Mainly caused by seasonal and regional factors.

However, the current inflationary trend in fodder is due to decline in wheat crop and increase in diesel cost, the official said. The total area under fodder is limited to about 4.6 per cent of the cropped area and has remained constant for the last four decades.

Know what is FPO
Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) is a self-help group formed by farmers. This group of farmers works in the interest of the farmers themselves. By joining the Farmer Producer Organizations, the farmers are able to protect their interests along with agricultural work by being sure.

It is evident that farmers work hard to grow grains, fruits, flowers and vegetables by sweating their blood. But many times they are not able to get a fair price for their produce in the market, due to which the farmers have to bear heavy losses. In such a situation, the Farmer Producer Organization stands with full force in the interest of the farmers at the time of bargaining in the market. Small farmers get a good price for their produce by joining the Farmer Producer Organizations. This will also increase the livelihood of the farmers.
