New Delhi. After the listing of snacks and namkeen giant Bikaji foods in the stock market, the country’s largest brand Haldiram’s has also started planning for an IPO. Shiv Ratan Agarwal’s brothers’ company is the promoter of Haldiram Bikaji. According to information received by CNBC-TV18, Haldiram’s IPO may come in the next 18 months.
Actually, most people do not know that Haldiram has two companies now. Nagpur’s Haldiram Foods International is run by the eldest brother Shiv Kishan Agarwal. While Delhi’s Haldiram Snacks is run by younger brothers Manohar Agarwal and Madhusudan Agarwal. Now both the brothers are going to merge their businesses of Delhi and Nagpur together to strengthen the Haldiram brand in the country. While the owner of Bikaji, who recently brought the IPO of the woolen company, is also his brother.
Bikaner’s Bhujia is crazy all over the world
Bhujia of Bikaner is famous all over the world. It was made from gram dal flour or gram flour but Gangabishan decided to make Bhujia in a different way. When Ganga Bishan Agarwal was 11 years old, he started helping his father in his Bhujia business. In childhood, he was called by the name of Haldiram at home. The new type of Bhujia that he made was a bit thin, which was made with moth flour instead of gram flour. His experiment was successful and Haldiram’s business continued to grow. In the last financial year 2021-22, the combined revenue of both the companies of Haldiram was around Rs 9000 crore.
Haldiram Bhujiawala’s business started from Kolkata
Ganga Bishan came to Kolkata in the 1950s with his sons Satyanarayana and Rameshwarlala. He started the brand ‘Haldiram Bhujiawala’. Ganga Bishan had three sons – Moolchand, Satyanarayan and Rameshwarlal. Moolchand’s four sons and one daughter are now running different snack companies. Ganga Bishan’s eldest grandson Shiv Kishan is also with him. After making business successful in Kolkata, Ganga Bishan returned to Bikaner.
From a small shop to the biggest brand of the country
Ganga Bishan returned to Bikaner in the 1960s leaving the Kolkata business in the hands of Rameshwarlala and Satyanarayan. Then Satyanarayan started his own separate brand ‘Haldiram & Sons’. But, he did not get success like his father. After this Rameshwarlal also separated from his brother Moolchand. In this way the business of Kolkata and Bikaner went into two different hands. Pavitra Kumar wrote a book in 2016 titled Bhujia Barons: The Untold Story of How Haldiram Built a Rs 5000-crore Empire. According to this book, Moolchand along with his wife and three sons used to run a bhujia shop in Bikaner. After the spectacular growth of his Bhujia business in Kolkata, many more things were added to his list.
This is how Haldiram’s started in Delhi
Moolchand’s youngest sons Manoharlal and Madhusudan started Haldiram’s in 1984 in Delhi. At the same time, Shiv Kishan Agarwal and his sister Saraswati started expanding their business in Maharashtra. In this way Haldiram’s business spread from one state to many states. Moolchand’s son Shiv Ratan took forward the business of Bhujia in Bikaner itself. Nowadays it is famous by the name of Bikaji. A few weeks back its Bikaji has presented its IPO in the stock market. At present, their business has spread a lot outside the country as well.
The dispute between the brothers over the brand name ended
He has a long legal battle going on with his cousin Prabhu over the use of the ‘Haldiram Bhujiawala’ brand. It started in the early 1990s. Due to this legal battle, Delhi’s business had to change its name to ‘Haldiram’s’. The fight ended in 2010 when Prabhu and his brother were banned from using ‘Haldiram’s’ or ‘Haldiram’ in Delhi.
Who is running Haldiram’s business now?
Haldiram’s business is currently divided into parts. All these business companies are registered as separate companies. Haldiram’s Delhi business is run by Manoharlal and Madhusudan Agarwal. On the other hand, Shiv Kishan Aggarwal runs the Nagpur business. While the business of Bikaner is in charge of Shiv Ratan Agarwal. The business of Kolkata is in charge of Rameshwarlal’s son Prabhu Agarwal.
This much is the revenue of the companies
In terms of revenue, Delhi’s company is the biggest among them. Its revenue is about 5 thousand crore rupees. After this comes the business of Kolkata. Its revenue is 4 thousand crore rupees. And the revenue of Bikaner business is Rs 1,600 crore. After the listing of Bikaji in the stock market, the three brothers are now planning to merge their businesses and present Haldiram’s IPO in the next 18 months.
